  • Top Tips for an Easter Egg Hunt

Easter weekend is the perfect time to get out into the garden and enjoy some time with the kids. An egg hunt creates a real sense of occasion that can keep the kids busy for hours, especially if you invite a few friends and family over to join in the fun.

An egg hunt can be as simple or as egg-stravagant as you want it to be, but here are a few tips to help you on your way to a great activity for all the family.

    Prep Your Eggs

For a quick hunt you could hide foil wrapped chocolate eggs in the garden, but you will need to keep a watchful eye to make sure the quickest kids don't gorge themselves before the others get a look in. Another alternative is to get the kids involved in decorating a few real eggs by dying them with food colouring or painting them. Prizes can then be given out at the end of the hunt based on how many eggs have been collected.

If you are catering for a variety of ages, use a colour system to signify which eggs are available to each age bracket. This will allow you to place a few eggs in easy spots for the toddlers, while the bigger kids have to work a little harder for their rewards.

    Lay Your Clues

For a more elaborate hunt you could lay a trail of written clues, or create a treasure map before ripping it into sections and scattering the pieces. This will turn the hunt into more of a collaborative effort as the kids work together to gather the pieces and reassemble the map.

However you decide to run your egg hunt, it's important that your garden is prepped and ready. After a tough winter your garden might be feeling a little bit sorry for itself, so the last thing you want is to subject it to the rigours of an egg hunt without making sure your lawn is ready to cope.

  • Lawn Pests: Ants

If you've spent time cultivating a beautiful, lush lawn, the last thing you want it for ant hills to pop up and spoil the appearance of your garden, and provide the ideal seed bed for weeds to move into your lawn. Ants can also damage the roots of your grass and other plants, which causes them to become yellow and unhealthy.

Ant hills are most commonly found in sandy soil, which can be brushed away when the soil is dry. Take care to avoid passing your lawn mower over a wet ant hill or you could accidentally smear it across the grass. To disperse the colony altogether you will need to target the ants themselves, and one way to do this is using a biological nematode.

Nematodes are a type of tiny unsegmented roundworms that act as an irritant to ants and causes them to move out in search of a new home. Although ants are most prevalent during the summer months, lawns can be treated from April to October, when the soil is warm enough for the nematodes to be effective.
